Just all depends on where you are fishing and the laws and rules there and the amount of fish in the lake.

Catch and release is good because catching is fun, but there's a limit to the amount of fish you can eat while they're fresh and tasty. (Maybe not a problem if you're into panfish, but catching 10 or 20 or more pounds of fish isn't rare in many situations, like ocean fishing.)
As to "torture", I think someone's been watching too many Bambi movies.

I LOVE fishing, but fish is not my favourite food. There are to considerations that converted me to a catch and releaser. First, if you keep, then you have to quit once you've caught your limit, plus you will be depleting the population of your favourite fishing hole. By releasing the fish once you've had some fun with I'm, you ensure that he is there to play with another day, and that he procreates and makes more fish for you to play with. You can literally fish all day when you release. I have used barbless hooks which makes it more challenging to land a fish, and is less traumatic for the fish at release time.

I always practice catch and release. After I have dinner in the bucket. I ain't a fanatic. LOL Seriously, I like knowing that I've released hundreds of walleyes and pike back into our own secret lake up in Canada. I released a 40" pike, that'll be nearly 4' now.

For me it's the thrill of catching and the fight to reel them in. I'm not really big on eating fish. But I do enjoy the patience and time put into the fight :) So it's catch and release for me.

I've been fishing for years. And I fish often. In my life, I've seen only a few actually throw back a big fish. Catch and release is political nonsense.

Not a thing wrong with the keepin' of panfish ie., blue gill, crappie, perch, etc., etc., because of their abundance. I'm a "die-hard", catch and releaser mainly because of my fetish for Steelhead and they are a species that are havin' BIG, BIG, problems (wild not hatchery)!! Mr. Gary, if ya' get the chance (if ya' don't already) and are in a local where there be crappie and or walleye, go for it - best tastin' fresh water fish (in my opinion) one can indulge...

I like to eat fish myself. I keep panfish and a few bass . I have found some lakes are over populated with certain varieties . I try and keep fish from those lakes.
I always let the larger fish go to spawn and I dont like to keeep many fish until after they spawn.

Just remember to catch your limit ,but limit your catch.Don't keep every fish you catch size does matter when spawning comes into play the stronger the gene pool the better.
