Depends on just how sedentary your job is but the guide line is that a normal healthy male should burn off about 3000calories daily. If you are really not very active then you will burn off less. In this case you should count your calorie intake and be sure not to go over the 2500 mark. Why not do a little more walking at lunch time, evenings and weekends otherwise you are becoming a prime subject for a heart attack, stroke or even diabetes.
At some point you could be in danger of all three.

First, figure out how many calories you need to eat in a day. A quick and dirty way to figure that is to multiply your body weight by 11 (10 if you are a girl). Eat about that many calories (+/- 100 is ok). This number takes into account the reduced calorie intake you are aiming for. Adult guys should never drop below about 1400 calories, adult women should never drop below 1200 calories. Don't eat much more or you don't create a deficit. Don't each much less or you enter starvation mode, and that is counter productive. Then keep working out 3 times a week. You should loose the healthy 1-2 pounds following this plan, though everyone is different and your actual millage may vary.

2,300-2,500 is not a bad guess. Of course he should be doing 30-40 minutes of vigorous exercise 5 days a week. This would keep him healthy and fit. He could then either loose some weight of eat more.

do not worry about what the "average" male caloric expenditure is, average body fat in the US is 15-17% and steadily increasing.
you need to eat according to your daily caloric expenditure. go to the website below to see how many calories a day you should be consuming:
