Light comes in the front. A lense bends the light so it will for a clear, flat image. Some of the light is blocked by an aperture to add further clarity. The light hits a flat sensor. The sensor is actually a huge, two dimensional grid of sensors that measure the light. Some sensors are designed to see red. Others see green. Others see blue. Together, they have enough information to make a full color image. This information is sent electronically to a memory chip. It stays there for later use.

Strictly speaking the digital photo cannot be compared with a film photo (at which you will use slides or negatives). From the technological point of view it is closer to a video filming, during which you receive the image at each moment.

Digital camera saves the image in the digital format on special medium. More precise consideration helps to understand the difference in methods of operation.
