Poor little thing. It is heartrending to hear them cough. Make sure she has a lot of liquids. Our boy had it and it eased after about 5 days and then slowly cleared. But be careful, he got another attack a while later to my horror and needed more antibiotics. Just give your babe a lot of cuddles and try not to get her excited as that seems to aggravate the cough.

My Cavalier has had it for 2 weeks. He is only 16 weeks old. It got so bad that he quit coughing, because the infection was so bad. He has been to the vet 4 times because of it.
They started him out with Amoxicillin. This did not help him. I took him back and they gave him Doxicycline. This didn't help him either. The vet has now put him on Ceta-drops which are a strong antibiotic. I am also giving him nebulizer treatments 3-5 times a day. He is finally getting better. I would definably take her to the vet. This infection can easily turn into pneumonia and I'm sure you don't want the infection to become chronic. While she is sick, please don't bathe her or let her stay outdoors for very long periods. I hope you puppy gets better. I have given my dog so much love and affection, that he is SO spoiled. I feel like i am taking care of an infant!! Good luck!

I once suffered from Chronic Bronchitis. I would suffer sometimes 3 to 4 times per year! Usually when there was a major change in the pressure outside (I live in the north, and the temperature spikes and dips do wonders to chronic sufferers of bronchitis!). Each time I would get horrible hacking coughs, hoarking up green phlegm..it was so frustrating!
The key to getting rid of your bronchitis is to find a way to completely eliminate the germs that are causing all the phlegm and irritation leading to your hoarking cough and heavy breathing. Keep reading to learn how to do kill these germs!!
This page it will change your life and make you feel 100% better within just 24 hours!

When we brought home our little puppy a few years ago, she developed kennel cough and it happened over a weekend when I could'nt do anything for her. I had children's benylin in the cupboard and gave her a young child's until I could get her to the vet on the Monday morning. He saw her and said it was the best thing to give her. So I continued with it for another day or two, and she made a full recovery very quickly! I agree with you it sounds horrible to hear them coughing, so. I hope your shih tzu soon gets better.

Kennel Cough whist it sounds very distressing is not usually that serious! What is very dangerous is if the animal gets a secondary infection which usually turns into pnuemonia! You can tell this because of an awful rattling in the chest when the animal is lying supine at rest. Good luck!

It could last awhile! If you put her in a room with a humidifier it might help My sister went the home remedy way when her 2 pugs got kennel cough and cured them without a trip to the Vet. She used a humidifier and vitamins. She told the Vet what she was doing and he told her to continue. She used Vitamin E and C I think but you should research it and call your Vet and ask if you can use the vitamins on top of the meds it may speed up her recovery.

Even with medication, it takes a while for kennel cough to take its course. I know it's dreadful to hear them, but there isn't much else you can do. It also takes 2 or 3 days for the antibiotic to kick in.

My dog had this at the beginning of the year. It lasted for 3 weeks. Although usually not serious it can develop and get worse. You are right tho it is hard to listen to them cough and not be able to do anything. Hope she feels better soon.

My puppy suffered with it for a week. So if it goes on longer than a week you should take her back to the vet just to make sure everything is ok. I hope she gets better soon!!!!
