I've tried Fabreze..not the answer. I think soaking this thing in a solution of something will be the only way to get rid of the smell. Can't use bleach..backpack is blue. Anyone know a tried and true solution?(pardon the pun)

I've been told that nothing can remove this odor as far as cats are concerned. They can smell through anything with their powerful sense of smell.

I'm mainly concerned with the human aspect of this problem. If I can't smell it..I don't care if it's there.

I intend to air dry the backpack in the sunshine for a couple of days..so the product must be able to stand up to that.

Here's a link to a homemade recipe I found online and I used it on carpet when my old cat had an accident. There is still no smell after a year.

I got Fish in a Supermarket and put it in Bike Saddlebag to take Home. I discovered Water from Fish had Leaked into Bag Producing Dreadful Stink. The saddlebags are made of Canvas, so I tried Fabreeze First didnt work then Scrubbed it with Soapy Water and Brush. I gave up for two Weeks but still the Stink was overpowering so I just Put it in Washing Machine with Ordinary Washing at NO 4 Cycle Persil or Daz or Ariel I dont Know now for sure the Powder I used. Result no Smell all is fine now. Worth a try Canvas did not Shrink or change Colour. It is Yellow Fluorescent on top and Black on Bottom. Of course I dont have the same Priorities as yourself I wasnt worried about a Colour change. In your case being a Girl you would worry about the Colour.Good Luck.

One of the best and easiest (and cheapest) ways to get rid of cat urine odor is to use cider vinegar. Soak the back pack in a strong solution of cider vinegar and water. This should remove the smell. And no, it will not smell like vinegar when it is rinsed.
I have 12 cats at this time so I know all about getting rid of urine smells.
No matter how well behaved your cats are, there will always be accidents.

Try Nature's Miracle, or this stuff that I found at the supermarket recently called Kids and Pets. I tried that this weekend and it worked really good. Put it on the backpack and let it soak in for about 10 or 15 minutes, then wash. Repeat if needed.

Try washing it, and use old-fashioned borax (sold as Boraxo) as well as detergent in the water. I've had many cats and some who sprayed, and I've found that plain old machine washing can do the trick. If the backpack is cotton canvas, it should be washable. Might be a little limper than it was, but a good washing with double rinse has worked for me more than once.

I would have to say Anti-Icky-Poo is the best cleaner I've ever used. Anti-Icky-Poo uses a live bacteria to eliminate any organic material left behind by your pets in fabrics and carpet. Unlike some chemical cleaning products that only mask over the smell, Anti-Icky-Poo not only removes the stain, but it also eliminates the source that causes pet odors to come back over and over again.
Anti-Icky-Poo elimantes any decaying organic material. So in addition to Pet Urine, it also works on Skunk Musk, decaying animal bodies, or any other decaying organic material. Anti-Icky-Poo will remove Pet Odors and Pet Stains from most materials such as carpet, fabric, upholstry, tile, wood floors, stainless steel or other types of flooring.
There are probably more animal behaviorists and veterinarians recommending Anti-Icky-Poo than any other odor eliminator available today.

Go to the petstore and get some urine removing spray, it should break up the stuff that's dried on, it doesn't cost much either. We had to get it because our cats were peeing by the front door, works like a charm. There's even some that're nontoxic.

Either that or stick the backpack in the washing machine.

Don't let anybody tell you the odor can't be removed. It can. Of course, you will need to wash it in a solution of any of these:

Simple Solution (available from pet stores)
Nature's Miracle (same)
X-O (available from cleaning supply companies)

I think I'd use Simple Solution. You'd spray it on enough to wet it. Let it sit about 5 minutes and then rinse or blot it off. It worked on my carpeting and shoes.

Yes, Nature's Miracle or other enzyme cleaner. You're supposed to let it dry naturally so leaving it in the sun won't hurt.

The more cleaning products you use before it though, the less effective it is. I'm not sure why.

Don't use anything with ammonia. Go to your local pet store and buy something specifically for urine stains. (you don't have to buy the most expensive) Urine gone has been tested buy our local news channel and does work. Soak it and let it dry like you said in the sun. (it may still smell while wet) It should go away. Good luck.
