It depends on your home of record, ie. which state you are a resident of. If you are in your home state you can expect to pay tax. If you are from a state that has no tax, you can file exemption papers at the time of registration. The law is different for each state.

It depends on the individual state - and it will be the state you buy/register it in, not your home of record. We bought a vehicle in Tennessee, and they do not charge sales tax or wheel tax to active duty military. We live in a different state now, so if/when I register my vehicle here, I will have to pay THIS state's sales tax on the current value of the car, since I have no proof of paying sales tax on it in TN.

Call the DMV where you are planning to register the vehicle and ask them, they can tell you the laws for that state. Also, if your spouse is the military servicemember, the title will probably have to have that name on it first in order to get any tax benefits. We had to re-do all the paperwork on my car because hubby's name wasn't first.

Go to your JAG/Legal office and ask for the Soldier and Sailor act paperwork for exemption on the tax. However, it is not always appicable for sales tax, rather usually the yearly registration fee taxes, etc. Each state can also add their own requirements -- it will still save you quite a bit though: our van cost $52 to register this year instead of $192.

Make sure you have enough to pay the bill if need be!

With most states, yes, you have to pay the taxes on the purchase price at the time of the sale. The taxes military personnel are usually exempt from are teh annual property taxes.

Go to Jag.

It's different for each state.

(for example - we paid full price in Texas - our home state - yet if we renew in Arizona - where we're stationed - it's $22 for 3 years)
