I have already received another one but I'm still afraid somebody else could use my number. What should I do to make sure nobody else uses it? Can I change the number? What can it be used for if all the person has is my name and number? PLEASE HELP ME!!!

You can put a fraud alert on your credit reports, but it rarely helps. I lost my social security card but somehow someone still managed to get a few credit cards in my name and even declare bankruptcy! And I still had a fraud alert on my credit report the entire time.

3 years later, it's all finally been handled - almost cost me my security clearance at work. My suggestion is to keep your credit in good shape. If someone steals your identity and gets a credit card and starts ruining your credit, credit bureaus will be more likely to believe you and help you if they notice you pay all of your other cards on time and have been for years.

File a police report, and contact the 3 major credit agencies. This way it will be noted and should they do anything against you for anything you didn't do it will not be held against you.
