This is the age when they start learning the difference between letters and words. Write them down for him and show him that T is a letter and tea is a word that begins with T and just happens to sound like it too. See if he can think of any other word/letter combinations like this (bee and B, pea and P, why and Y, etc.)

My nephew had the same problem. He wondered why "t" was in the letter stop but it started his name, "Tony".

Anyway, what my sister did was to tell him that the alphabet has 26 letter and all the letter have a different sound. In fact something with you put two letter together like br, is sound different than just b by itself.

Try cutting out the alphabet with all the letter on it and go through the letter and there sound. Make a game of it, put new combination together. Good luck

Letters are like solders, they are strong and powerful when they are together like a team. They are making different teams for different words.
For a word TREE you'll put this specific group of letters together and first one is T. You call it TREE so people can understand what you are talking about.

Look at word CAT, well there is also T letter only in the end, but letter's different combination makes completely different meaning and again lets you to express yourself properly. As you see, the same letter has many different jobs (words.)

You don't want to say: "Mom, I would like to drink my tree!" because you want people to understand you, so you will use the T letter, but in different combination - TEA.

T - is just a letter which serving many, many different words. Which helps people to use language as powerful tool of communication.

just tell him that some words in the english language sound like other words (bear and bare), and some sound like letters (b and bee, j and jay, p and pee, r and are), etc.

ask him to think about other words that sound the same. it will get him thinking about words and language (as he already is), and give you a break from his very smart questions! (tuff having a smart kid, eh?

I hope your son has a good name and a nickname too. Tell him that both names do exist for him. Likewise, T is for tree and T is for tea.

Take him seriously. Give him a serious answer. Write down the different words for him. Look up their definitions with him. Show him how to use a dictionary or look up words on-line.

When I homeschooled my kids and things like this would come up, I'd explain that when you come right down to it, the English language rules make no real sense... This took alot of grief out of learning homophones and such.
