I have owned a budgie for over a year but I need to give him up.
The bird really likes me. Every time I walk pass his cage he jumps up to get my attention and gets angry if I walk away. He likes to be on my finger, etc.
I was wondering, if I give him to a new owner he never met will tramatise him. Will he be alright with a new owner or will he be depressed forever knowing I'm not around?

My Aunt got a budgie who was hand tame and very social with her previous owners. They let her get to know the bird a little in their house before she brought her home and within a few days she had warmed up to everyone in the family. As long as they don't rush him, he'll be fine.

I also got a "used" cockatiel and he loved anyone willing to feed him cheese.

I'm sure you'll do it anyway, but just make sure the new person knows what his favorite things are, and all his toys and his cage go with him. Then he can feel like he hasn't lost everything and he'll adjust easier.

Budgies are intelligent little guys and the move will upset him at first. However they do get over it and will respond well to a loving owner who knows what they're doing. You can help ease the transition to his new home by telling the new owner what he likes and starting the owner off with your budgie's usual food. Even a list of the bird's favorite foods, music and TV shows will help.

Good luck! It is hard giving up a beloved companion.

oh i'm sorry you hv to give up your parakeet. that must be hard, especially since he seems very attached to you.

well, parakeets are social birds, and they will grow to be comfortable with a new family. as long as you don't rush them into it. let the new family come and visit with him and try and spend time with him at your place, and then soon, bring him to visit in their place and just get him used to them that way. i'm sure that in time he will grow to love them and be social with them, and you can feel comfortable knowing that he's going to a good home.

As long as the new owner treats him good like you did, he should be able to become attached to that person as well.
