All instructors should know that when you are first starting to exercise you can't push yourself too hard or you will end up with muscle cramps and pains. You have to start on the lightest weight and the slower reps and then every week increase the weight or reps based on what you can handle. Even for the more fit people who haven't worked out in a long time, they shouldn't strain themselves knowing that months ago they could lift so much weight, etc. Don't over due yourself. You have to keep it going. Oh and don't be concerned with weight either, because you will lose fat but gain muscle so just focus on your pants size, etc. That should help boost your confidence. ;)

A good gym instructor won't push you right away, and don't let them if they try. Tell them that you're starting out and you're out of shape and want to work up.
It won't be long though until you can push yourself farther, especially if you used to exercise, your body will adapt pretty fast. Make sure to eat healthy too so you won't get fatigue quite so easily, and buy some protein powder for shakes, it's well tasty and will help too.
As for cardio, you'll probably start with fast walking or biking then move up to more and more. It's all about gradual steps.
Best of luck.

Well if you have a good instructor he will only make you do a few minutes at a time because you havent excercise for over 10 years so he would have to be fragile with you..So do a few minutes on a few machines first time you go to get you going, then next time you go do alittle bit more, the a few minutes with in 1 month you will be able to exercise fairly hard..make sure you do some crunches...lol you gotta make your stomache solid good luck..if you need any more tips ask takecare..

As someone who has been there...I have had my current gym membership for 5 years...and for awhile there it was on again off again...I know what its like to be pushed to the point of exhaustion. You need to build up, other wise if you push to far in the beginning you will be in pain. Start off slowly doing about 20 minutes of machines...and then do about 20 minutes of cardio, I would say slightly intense....and the more you go the more you build. My trainer told me that you should do cardio after you do the machines because it helps to burn more calories that way. I hope this has helped.

dont do anything such as weight lifting as this will turn your fat into muscle. also overdoing it will cause alot of pressure on your life style.
as you havent done much exercise in a while id start off slow. try the bike and the tredmill, go at a pace comfy for you. also swimming helps too and it can be done with the family.
try and get someone to watch kids for the day and go on awalk with your fella or a friend. walking up hills are good for exercise. it helps loosen you up so you can do more next time.

the gym instructors won't push you, it may feel like it if you haven't exercised for some years, but they are trained to create a programme and level that's right for you and will enable you to see results. Make sure you're doing things you enjoy and vary your workouts so you don't get bored. start with a 40minute programme and build up to 60 minutes or more if you're enjoying it. And give yourself treats after a tougher workout to make your body feel really good like regular massages and facials.

A good trainer won't push you in the beginning. It is more important that you learn to exercise the right way when beginning a work out program, so your first few workouts should be easy and focus on proper form.

Well, when I started going to the gym I got a personal trainer for 1 day. He explained to me that I was going to feel sore no matter what I did, so he had me do 30 minutes of cardio excercises. This helped me get use to getting my heart rate up and I went from there.

Try 30 min Mon, Wed, Friday for the first week or two.
Then increase the minutes up to an hour, and go 3 - 5 times per week. Do cardio and weights. Cardio 3 times per week, weights 1 or 2 times per week.
