What are the mechanics of a cat's purr?

I've looked online and no-one seems to know. Isn't that weird?

cats purr by using their vocal cord.

I read in Elizabeth Marshall Thomas' "The Tribe of Tiger", an excellent book about cats, that they really don't know how cats do it. I just like to listen to them when they purr. :-)
