Depends. How old is she? Is she really into writing? If she is about to graduate, or if she has been honored for her writing/entered writing contests, a decent laptop might be a good idea.
Otherwise, good examples of biographical and historical writing abounds--you know better than we do about her interests and speaking with a librarian will give you ideas.
