I have only been to a couple of doctors in the past 15 years and they do not seem to believe me. Years ago, I tried Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac. I could not leave the house because of severe, constant diarhea. Wellbutrin did not cause it but I could not sleep with the heartburn. So I just dealt with my mild chronic depression for 10 more years. Now my anxiety level is very high. My sister does well on Effexor XR. My doctor gave me some. I took 1 37.5 mg pill at 6 pm. By 9:00 pm I was in the bathroom with diarhea. You know the kind that gives no warning and is all water. (Sorry to be so graphic but I don't want someone to misunderstand.) I lost 4 pounds overnight! I could not go to work today. Has anyone else had this experience with these type of medications and have you found something that works well?

I never had that experience with Effexor XR, but if your doctor doesn't believe you about the side effects, find a new doctor who does. Just because it isn't common doesn't mean it isn't happening to you. On the plus side, a lot of the side effects of drugs like that usually go away within a few weeks, and I imagine diarrhea wouldn't last longer than a week or so on them (how long did it last before?). Call your doctor's office today and ask to speak to him/her and if you get a negative response, find a new doctor ASAP. In the meantime, go to the pharmacy (or send someone for you) to get something like Immodium which is an anti-diarrhea medicine that you can purchase over the counter.

the diarrhea could be a cause/effect issue not to the meds, but to your emotions. My husband has been on Effexor and all the others you mentioned. The Effexor works as long as you take it everyday - it's one of the only depression meds that escapes your body pretty fast. I would try to take Imodium or some anti-diarrhea med along with it and then go to a gastric specialist just to make sure your insides are working properly. I know and have seen with my husband, his anxiety causes both heartburn, diarrhea and/or vomiting, most of it occurs when emotions are running strong. Good Luck. I believe in Effexor. Talk to your general practitioner as well as your psych guy, but in the mean-time, try an anti-diarrhea over the counter med.

i take effexor xr and never had that problem. since you've tried so many different brands with the same problem, it may be something in the medication your body is not agreeing with or you are allergic to. only your doc can help you with this one.
