I'd say the best way to start is to know somebody who can give you a job!! If you don't know someone, then begin by writing reviews freelance and sending them to local entertainment guides. They usually have a food section and will be more open to using "unknowns".

In terms of doing something other than full time cooking, look into teaching. Again, it is often difficult to get in, and you may need a teaching diploma, but the hours are great and you still get to cook. Perfect job really, plus you can get a restaurant job in the summer to give you that rush back.

Good Luck!!

how do i get a job as a food writer in the uk?

1) Become a celebrity
2) Sleep with a food & drink features editor
3) Demonstrate you can write on food and drink better than AA Gill

Actually, any one can write about food. What is difficult is getting paid for it. Why not start a blog and write about food -- then you'll have something to show potential employers. See Handto Mouth - the blog of newspaper and book writer JP Roussouw at http://www.handtomouth.co.za/category/fo... and Tales of a Sommelier - blog of a wine waiter at a 2 Michelin starred UK restaurant http://grazzac.blogspot.com/

Why not blog about your own job (anonymously of course) warts and all? Ramseys Kitchen Nightmares TV has a big following and if you do a blog on what really happens in your kitchen you may get a book deal out of it.
