You need a balance. Carbohydrates for the instant energy and protein to help maintain your energy level and increase your endurance during the workout. As for how much? You need to determine how long your planning to workout and eat accordingly. It took me a while to figure out the best balance.

I really like Green tea. Lipton makes it in a lot of flavors, and I don't even put sugar in it. It gives me a boost, and I drink it while I'm working out. It also makes you use the bathroom, so it helps clean out your system. (Great antioxidants!)
