I am currently dealing with this issue with my nephew. He's at the end of his junior year and has less than half the credits needed to graduate. For him I think a GED is going to be the answer. For you, how close are you? If a little work can get you a full diploma then go for it. It sounds like you are pro-active about your education and that is awesome and will really help in college. You may want to talk to a college guidance counselor since they want to help you get in their college and can see what path you need to take.

My experience with kids has led me to believe that many are "done" with school after the sophmore year. If they have a job, are looking at college, then leaving high school early is fine. If they party all night, sleep all day, and deserve a diploma from Loserville, USA, then they might as well stay in HS while they grow up.

In the past when kids took a GED it was because they couldn't cut it. That's what your parents grew up with. Now days, alternative education is so diverse!! And a proficiency exam, or GED, doesn't really hamper you. Talk to a college counselor, get your ducks in a row, then speak to your parents like an adult with a plan, not a kid throwing a fit. They'll listen.

You have come this far just finish up High School. Here is a little secret i learned. If you where set to Graduate this year odds are they already ordered your diploma. that being said you can finish school next year if needed but your Diploma will still say you Graduated on time. This happened to me when i was 1 credit shy of my goal.. I took 1 year off after that and then went to night classes to get my last credit and got my diploma and it says i graduated in 01 when it was really the end of 02. getting a GED now when you are this close to graduating in my opinion is a bad one if you needed a but load of credits then i would say go for it.

I tend to view it as an easy way out as well. Some times we just have to suck it up and take the classes we need to take to finish. Even in higher ed you have 'core classes', math eng, history, music, science, etc. . You don't get to choose whatever you like even then. And when you get into the working world you have to do things you don't like.
