You are wise to seek help -

What does making a few dinners do to help? Freezing his favorites or a pizza shows up - a few of his favorite books, magazines (same with your MIL) just be there. In little ways.
That means the most. Try to just listen and do small things -
like your husbands moms favorite flower. Drop by with them and just say "oh I was thinking of you all"..
Don't be a pest, but sit back and do things from the heart.
It means the most.

Just be there. Help out in any way you can. That will make such a difference. My father had cancer (I was still young) and all my brothers-in-law (and my sisters) helped out with anything/everything. Took him to the doctors, the guys took turns changing his incision dressing (so my mom wouldn't have to see it), going to the store, cleaning the house, looking after me, etc. My father died, but my mother always remembered what everyone did for my dad and her.

I am sorry to hear of this development in your family. I lost my mother to cancer just last month, so I can understand what feelings you have. I gained a lot of strength and help from Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn's book, "Full Catastrophe Living", where he discusses such stress.
Might I suggest however, that you check with the oncologist's office to see if they can introduce you to people in similar situations? Most offices have a contacts list, and I found it very helpful, just to share how I was feeling with others.
Best wishes to your family

you need to be the rock for your family too. if your father in law does have cancer this will be extremely stressful on your family. i think by just being there for them to lean on and depend on will help out alot.
