In memory of is usually for those that have died.
In honor of is usually for people still living.

"In memory " is for the deceased. It's what they put at the end to tv episodes or in books.
"In honor" is for the living.
It is very nice of you to do this. You're a good person. It's nice to see there are still a few around.

As someone else stated, 'in memory of' is to make the donation in the name of a deceased individual. 'In honor' is to make the donation in the name of someone still living.

Either would be acceptable. I think that in general, "in memory" should be used for the deceased, unless he was a member of the military; in which case I would use "In Honor"

In memory of is correct.
How nice you want to do this, I'm sure the family will be pleased.
