Here's a little trick I do to canned icing and everyone thinks its homemade...
I empty the can of icing in my mixing bowl, add a couple tablespoons of butter or margarine ( the "tub" kind will work too, but use less). If ya need to add a bit of vanilla or other flavoring, that's fine - it's all yours. Use the hand mixer for a few minutes and ya have a really good and easy to spread icing.
Every time I do this, I get compliments and people think its really "homemade". I use whatever brand of icing I find on sale - usually Pillsbury or Duncan Hines.
Enjoy!

I have been baking for years and I can honestly tell you that Duncan Hines brand of icing is the BEST!! I have tried Pillsbury icing, and it honestly just isn't as good as Duncan Hines is!! I hope that this has been helpful for you and good luck on your decision!! ;-)

Home made. Take two cups of powdered sugar, at a few drops of vanilla, stir in milk by the tablespoon until you get the desired consistency. If you want color, add food coloring. If you want chocolate, melt some chocolate chips and add to powdered sugar.

Homemade is best. I find the canned stuff to be way too sweet. Check the packages of powdered sugar or cocoa for recipes.

If you are going to go with store bought, they are pretty much the same, so choose what ever flavor you like.
