making up stories that involve her mother--who abandoned her at 2 months before her 2nd birthday?
She is lovingly cared for in the daytime by her aunt and grandmother, as well as her dad and his girlfriend in the evenings and weekends. She has a 'star' personality--she gets attn. where ever she goes and is loved by any new ppl. she has an abundance of love & attn, so why make up stories about someone she should have forgotten by now?
Also, her mother paid very little attn to her and her autistic brother before the mom abandoned the kids.

Because everyone else she knows has a mother and she is getting to the age where she can see the difference. I think it is probably best to let her make up stories but perhaps you can guide them by asking questions so she can work out her feelings. You know, no matter how loving the environment you provide, she will always have issues with being abandoned by her mother. All you can do is love her and allow her to work it out the best way for her.

Fortunately in most cases there is a bond established in the womb during the pregnancy and children are more intellectual than we give them credit for. To me this is her way of reassuring herself that she is doing well. Its OK to play make believe isn't it? I don't know that its harmful to her and whether we like it or not she still has a biological mother and even if that mother isn't a good "Mom" she still has the right to remember her. The more this is made a big deal the more it will evolve into a big deal. Let it go. This only confirms her active imagination and the ability to "LOVE UNCONDITIONALLY" which we can't say for her own mother. She must get that from her father and all you family members that lead by example for her. Stay focused on that "Star" personality and you won't worry so much. Take good care you're all doing good as far as raising her up to be a positive contributing person in society. Which is increasingly rare today! Good luck!

At 3 1/2 how can she possibly understand that her mother has abandoned her. Just because her mother isn't around dosn't mean she will forget her. She will always wonder where her mother is. This is human nature. Her mum obviously couldn't cope with things as they were, But sounds like she has instilled some love in this little girl. Try not to be harsh for the childs sake.
