An article appeared in the Ottawa Citizen of Mar. 22/07 indicating that the latest Federal Government budget dealt with allowing some type of tax break on gasoline for cars which saved on fuel. The Smart car was given as an example

It was up to $2000 on fuel efficient cars. The Smart car would fall into the highest tax break, others depend on the fuel consumption based on manufactured posted city/highway combined. High gas users pay extra, an award for buying clean fuel efficient vehicles, about time I say.
Hybrids get a separate savings on the GST already.

I am not sure exactly how much but in the US it is around a $1300 tax break if you drive the definition of a hybrid.
