Bent grass has been used for decades and poa annua grass has been used in the past twenty years. Bent grass is easier to maintain because the blades grow more consistently. Poa annua blades don't grow at the same rate and therefore create an uneven putting surface.

Actually, Bermuda grass is a warm climate grass that is used in the South, not the Northeast. There are more than two species of grass in the Northeast, but two of the most popular are Bent Grass and Poa Annua.

Bent grass and poa. Bent is the prefered as it is consistent. poa is actually a annual blue grass and is easily spotted as it stays green longer in the dorminate stages of other grass, it also is more hearty than bent which makes it easier to maintain. The downside is it seeds alot which makes for inconsistent rolls. Also i find it a bit unsitely when mixed with other turf.
