Some viruses are killed in stomach acid, but H5N1 is not. It is spread via fecal matter & respiratory secretions.

The U.S. gov tested birds in every state in 2006, and they should have swabbed both ends of each bird for samples to test.

Human patients who are infected shed virus through respiratory secretions when they sneeze - the virus becomes airborne and anyone walking through that area would become infected.

Also if they sneeze and contaminate their hands and then touch a surface, the surface becomes infected. So doorknobs, telephones, keyboards, etc. are likely contaminated.

Another symptom of H5N1 is diarrhea, and anyone taking care of a patient needs to be aware that this is a hazard as well.

The fatality rate for H5N1 infection for the past six months was 76%.

The virus is shed in fecal matter. This most commonly happens 7-14 days post infection. This is how other birds then become infected.
