I do not know who started e-tickets but cost cutting is one of the major reasons for e-ticketing. It is interesting to know that by 2008, no paper tickets will exist anymore. IATA (International Air-transport association) has sent a deadline for all member airlines to convert to e-tickets by 2008. Carriers who cant not will not be allowed to sell any paper ticket on the others network.

I can remember using them back in 2000 and maybe 1999 on American and United. I beleive that either American or United were the first two major US Commercial Airlines to take that step.

The ads I remember showed a person's drivers license as the "e-ticket" ...

They first started testing this in the year 2000 on a chinese airline. I believe.
