liver disease of some kind will cause the low bilirubin, lethargy, upset stomach and loss of appetite.

a person doesn't necessarily have to have cirrhosis to have these symptoms, more than likely it is a disease that could lead up to cirrhosis that affect the liver (as well as other organ involvement)

some to think about are:
NASH, Alcoholic Steatosis, HBV, HCV, hemochromatosis and a couple of others.

The best thing to do is see a doctor to rule out possibilities-meanwhile have your father take Milk Thistle-this herb is the only one that proves to work by lessoning the load on the liver through it's anti-inflammatory properties and also aids in keeping alt and ast levels down that are responsible for cancer cell growth.

Things not to consume or do:
red meat
iron (foods as well as multivitamins, ask your pharmacy which vitamins do not contain iron)
alcohol (this inhibits liver disease)
sugar (artificial or refined)

Things to consume or do:
Attend a doctors appointment with your dad
Have him drink water
Take milk thistle
Eat a good diet with low protein foods or easier to digest protein foods like veggies and nuts
once you find out why it's this way, read up on information about what is causing his liver disease.
Support- which you've shown already by asking the question...

I could tell you more, but we dont know what the underlying issue is, so when you find out contact me.

HUGS!

to the previous poster and those that aren't aware....
If a person has HCV, sometimes the ALT and AST levels are not elevated...it's a natural occurance of HCV. This is not a conclusive test for some of us. Sometimes further testing such as checking for antibodies first is the way to go.
Speaking from experience-my alt and ast levels for the most part over a 10 year period were always normal. When they were elevated, the doctor would blame that on a bad tooth-whats funny is, the HCV caused the bad tooth as it does destroy bone. PCP doctors are not trained enough where liver disease is of concern.

Decreased bilirubin levels are often associated with cirrhosis and Hepatitis... Does your dad have either of these diseases? If he hasn't been cleared of these diseases, take him back to the doctor, notify them of his test results and have him rechecked...

Best wishes!!!

With his age have him go to the doctor & get his ALT levels checked. He could have Hepititus C. ASAP.

tell him to get off his butt and stop feeling sorry for himself --- at 52 he's not an old man --- and he doesn't need to hinder you in your life --- a good brisk walk 1 hour every day solves all sorts of problems --- including his liver ( and see how i didn't touch on the grog intake )!!!
