They were religious organizations with political ties.

Phariseeism evolved into today's Rabbinic Judaism. The Pharisees believed God permitted non-Levites to teach and interpret Scripture and enforce the Mosaic Law; they were the first Rabbis. (There is much controversy as to whether or not the Bible actually gives them this right.)

The Sadducees (who were also not Levites) were made up of wealthier Jews who were very politically motivated. As Jesus pointed out, one of their prime beliefs was that there would be no bodily resurrection -- a teaching that contradicts the plain meaning of OT Scripture. The Sadducees no longer exist today.

Both movements reflect an effort by the non-priestly class (all Jewish Tribes other than the Tribe of Levi) to usurp some of the power of the Levitical (Temple service) and Aaronic (priestly) classes.

Most of what we know about Sadducee comes from the historian Josephus. They were a cult split off from the High Priest of the Temple and started by High Priest Zadok. They did not necessarily believe in the immortality of the soul, which would have been the Jewish way of thinking. The Temple, I will remind you, was not, nor was it ever a monothesis practice. Moses worshiped a bronze snake and an invisible god said to perch on top of a pillar, besides Jaweh.

The Pharisee acted as emissaries to and from the High Priest and as officials to the occupying government.

The High Priest and the Sadducee disappeared in 69-70AD with the Roman destruction of the Temple. The Pharisee lived on after Judiasm changed to the Rabbical system we observe today.

Pharisee- their system of religion was a form and nothing more. They were noted for their self-righteousness and their pride (Mt 9:11; Lu 7:39; 18:11,12). They were hypocrites.
The fundamental principle all of the of the Pharisees, common to them with all orthodox modern Jews, is that by the side of the written law regarded as a summary of the principles and general laws of the Hebrew people there was on oral law to complete and to explain the written law, given to Moses on Mount Sinai and transmitted by him by word of mouth. The first portion of the Talmud, called the Mishna or "second law," contains this oral law. It is a digest of the Jewish traditions and a compendium of the whole ritual law, and it came at length to be esteemed far above the sacred text.
It was a leading aim of the Redeemer to teach men that true piety consisted not in forms, but in substance, not in outward observances, but in an inward spirit. The whole system of Pharisaic piety led to exactly opposite conclusions. The lowliness of piety was, according to the teaching of Jesus, an inseparable concomitant of its reality; but the Pharisees sought mainly to attract the attention and to excite the admiration of men.

Sadducee - deny the resurrection and that is why they were sadd-u-cee.
The only reference to them in the Gospels of Mark (Mark 12:18-27) and Luke (Lu 20:27-38) is their attempting to ridicule the doctrine of the resurrection, which they denied, as they also denied the existence of angels.

Real answer now, from an expert:

The Pharisees were the Rabbinical leaders, priests, and laymen who followed the branch of Judaism originally developed by Ezra the Scribe, for whom the Book of Ezra in the Bible is named. The Orthodox Judaism of today is based on Pharisaism.

The Saducees were a break off sect of the Pharisees founded by a man named Tzadok who took a Pharisaic teaching, "Do not be like servants who serve their master only for reward, but be like servants who serve their master not for reward," to a weird extreme and concluded there was no reward or afterlife.

This idea caught on principally among the wealthy and the Priesthood, who the Hellenized and stopped believing in the Jewish Oral traditions.

Tzadok had a colleague named Boethus, who founded a similar group.

Teachers of the Law, and hypocrites. They both hated Jesus because they did not (and many still don't) understand that He [Jesus] is the Messiah, the Son of the living God, God Himself.
