Firstly let me say that I've tried most of the Over-The-Counter treatments you get from the pharmacy, and they range from the fairly ineffective to the completely useless. They're also expensive. Non-prescription treatments cannot get at the root of the problem which lies beneath the skin: overproduction of oil and bacteria.

You need to go to your doctor. If he or she is not sympathetic, find someone who is and get to a Dermatology Specialist (SOS Acne has various arguments to use to your doctor).

The treatments your doctor usually prescribes are:

(rated on a scale of 1 to 5 stars)

1. Benzoyl peroxide containing creams *
2. Topical Antibiotics (a cream or lotion to spread on the skin) *
3. Oral antibiotics (pills you take). Minocycline (Minocin) is the best **
4. Oral antibiotics + Retin-A (so the best antibiotic treatment is Minocycline + Retin-A)***
5. Dianette/Diane 35- the female contraceptive pill***
6. Isotretinoin (Accutane/Roaccutane)*****

There are many good gentle cleansers on the market. Look for a cleanser made specifically for the face that does not overdry. You want something that cleanses but does not strip the skin. Look for a cleanser that does not contain any active ingredients. One exception is the active ingredient triclosan which is a mild antibacterial. It should not create a problem. Avoid using bath soap on your face.

Hi!

Sorry to hear about your acne problem. Here is an article I wrote that might help. Most of the "cures" are common household items. Good luck!

Quick Tips For Acne Relief

Studies show that an estimated 80 % percent of people
experience acne at some point. This is true for both
males and females. What triggers acne is not really
known, however, most dermatologists agree on a few theories.

Acne usually shows up at pre-adolescence. Commonly
between the ages of eleven and thirteen. What a bummer!
Just when we get to notice the opposite sex....Bam!
Acne rears its ugly head. Or whitehead, as the case may be.

Changes in hormone levels attribute to acne. This can
be true at any age, not just at the early years.

Both males and females experience increased hormone
levels as their bodies change. These hormones are
called androgens, and will enlarge the facial glands.
The oil produced is known as sebum. The hair follicles
shed dead cells too quickly and the cells and sebum
form a blockage in the gland.

Nowadays, doctors and advertisements offer us different
products that might help solve our worries about acne.
Most of these are topicals and are sold over-the-counter
cures.

I don't know about you, but I would rather NOT pay for
something if I have an alternative already lurking in
my house, or yard.

There are actually acne home remedies that you can find
and use inside your home or in your garden. All you have
to do is to know how you can use that acne home remedy
to finally say goodbye to your acne worries.

Don't forget to brush your....face?

There is still no scientific basis nor findings yet that
discusses how the toothpaste can actually sometimes lessen,
if not cure, the spread of acne. It might be a result of
trial and discovery that made the toothpaste serve not
only to clean the teeth but also as an acne home remedy!

To use it, just apply it directly to your zits before
sleeping. This is believed to help control the swelling
overnight. Just make sure that it is not the gel but
the paste.

And be sure to remove it before going out the next day!

Bushes, Shrubs and Other Remedies

There are herbs and other plants that also proved to serve
as a good acne home remedy.

*You can try methi (fenugreek) leaves made to a paste
and applied to stay in your face for 10-15 minutes.

*Two cloves of crushed garlic applied twice a day is
another choice, just bear with the strong smell of
this acne home remedy!

*A combination of witch hazel, tea tree and sweet fennel
essential oils put into water can also give satisfactory
results. Just always stir or shake it before applying
with cotton wool twice a day.

*Aloe Vera is also proven to be great as an acne home
remedy! Just make a juice out of it and apply it twice
a day for the fast healing.

*Cucumber will never be out of the list for beauty
regimen. Apply a paste of it as a mask and leave it
for 30 minutes.

*A paste of ground radish, as well as ground sesame
seeds, are also very good options to help get your
acne cured.

So, there you have it. All you have to do is look around
the house, or yard, get in touch with nature, and start
seeing that shiny, clear, pink skin you almost forgot
you had!

Some acne is brought on by medical conditions and requires treatment by a trained professional. The single most common cause of acne is still puberty and the associated changing hormones. For mild or occasional acne, there are some effective treatments but for severe acne, it is best to consult a medical professional.

1. One of the best treatments for acne is witch hazel. This clear astringent strips excess oil from the pores and promotes healthy skin. It is perhaps the oldest form of modern skincare. The use of witch hazel was extremely prevalent in the 1950s and 1960s to combat teenage acne. Because it is a natually-occuring plant, witch hazel is often less harsh than chemically-based astringents. In addition, it has some natural oils in it as well which help avoid over-drying the skin.

2. Another good acne treatment via prevention comes with oatmeal and almond oil or other natural cleansing products. Since acne is caused by over-production of oil by the skin cells, it is important that the cleanser used on the skin be gentle. If the skin is deprived of all its natural oils because of too harsh a cleanser, it will compensate by producing more oil and generally, more acne.

A combination of oatmeal and almond oil in a face mask will help gently cleanse the skin as the oatmeal helps absorb excess skin oils. The natural almond oil helps maintain balance for the skin and prevents over-drying.

3. Once acne develops, treatment can come in many forms. Most people begin by trying over-the-counter remedies including benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. The point of these medications is to draw the excess oil out of the blemish and promote healing. Again, the issue with these treatments is the potential for over-drying. Both products, sold under various trade names, have a drying property which can cause the nearby skin to again over-produce oil and create an acne cycle.

4. In addition to these over-the-counter treatments, there are prescriptions that can be used to fight acne. For more severe cases of acne, one preferred treatment is antibiotics. Several different antibiotics have been used effectively to treat acne, including tetracycline and others. The problem with this form of treatment is twofold: First, to be effective, the treatment often requires repeated regiments of the antibiotics. That can make the antibiotic less effective later in life for treating other infections. Second, some antibiotics, including tetracycline, can make the skin particularly sensitive, leading to sunburns or skin irritations.

5. The fifth best way to treat acne is see a dermatologists who can also prescribe Retin-A in its various forms as a topical treatment for acne. In addition to requiring a prescription, this acne treatment can be drying and irritating to the skin. However, it is widely accepted as the most successful acne treatment available today for severe acne. Those who have used it report that it can leave the skin flaky and itchy for the first several days and that it requires long-term use to be effective. They recommend coupling with a moisturizer that does not clog pores.

try keeping your face clean. Wash it 3 times a day. Put white toothpaste on your big pimples. This will help dry them out and come to a "head". Also, try very hard not to pop any that are around your eyes. If you do pop one around that area you run a risk of getting an infection if it gets in your eyes.

Also try using rubbing alcohol (the kind you put on scrapped knees to clean out the dirt), this will help dry it out.

Avoid fatty foods. They say this doesn't really do anything but, I have seen otherwise.

Best overall though would be to keep you face clean, get in the sunlight and try not to touch your face.

Good luck!
