if he is too smooth, doesnt answer his cell phone and doesnt call back within an hour, spend a lot of time with his friends, goes out a lot without you, has a little too much self love, selfconfidence, doesnt like answering questions, doesnt want to spend a his free time with you

How are they discernable? You can only really assume they are till they are caught right?
If they are very good you probably wont be able to tell, just suspect and assume they are based on how they are around other women. Otherwise you may go by what others (ladies, people that know him) say about him.
I suppose big signs are being a flirt, him checking out other ladies when you are with him, phone calls / texts / emails from other ladies.

The question is to vague.
If the term player is meant as a profession then you need to be more specific.
If you mean in terms of slang(relationships) then there are many ways to find out but you must be experienced to catch it right away by the interaction with their prey.
If you mean in terms of business(IE: team player) that means someone who is a heavy producer and motivator in a work environment(corporate; sports; fast food; etc.)
