My husband and son (7 years) is wanting a boston terrier, and I
am firmly against this idea. We also have a 2 year old, and we live in the hot, humid climate of Louisiana. I do not want an animal in the house due to my concerns about allergies, dog smell, and destruction of household items (furniture, shoes etc.) I am very meticulous about my home.
I would like for dog owners and non dog owners to provide their opinions to this dog dilemma.

I don't know if the previous people who answered even have a BT, because my female BT is the most lovable, friendly, safe, non-confrontational dog i know. She's mostly obedient and stays in range of me at all times. We have a 20mo old son and she is very gentle with him and knows her toys from his. she never snaps at him or any other dog. She has her terrier moments but those are few and far between and almost only when she is excited and wants to play. the only cons I've experienced is the farting, snoring and picky eating. She's the best dog and loves to snuggle and give kisses. I highly recommend getting a BT. Maybe because I went to a good breeder, don't buy one of the interenet unless they are reputable.

I am having a mix between a pug and the Boston. Pros's that I can think of he is very lively like to play almost non stop in him, clever, very good watch dog as well. Very protective dog. Play full there is a list that goes on about this dog. Accordingly to me you wont make a mistake getting a Boston terrier. Con's is only the can develop a skin allergies. But the love to be inside - you can potty train your dog so the dog can let you know when he want to go outside. The don't shed so much hair but after a bath brush their hair - the lose one's go out. I have a 2 yr old boston terrier. If you want an outside dog, don't get a BT - you will make him/her VERY unhappy and I feel that you owe something to the dog as well.. They are extremely social, intelligent, loving dogs - mine is the biggest baby you've ever seen.
They love to jump, run, and play and they can jump quite high - we have a 5 ft. brick wall around our property and mine can jump over it.
Everyone that I know that has or has had one says they are like a person and they are. They are wonderful animals, but you should actually want a dog to have a BT. It would never be happy away from the family.

i have a Boston. they are very smart and trainable, very cute. our Boston is 12 human years old and now very sick with so many problems, it is very sad , she is peeping ,pooping in the house, we have to keep newspaper down in her space at night.thought she was very enjoyable i would never get an other dog of any kind, it is not worth it economically or emotionally.

It is cruel to keep a dog outside it's whole life and expect it to be a part of your family's life. Therefore i wouldn't get a dog if i were you, if you keep the dog clean and groomed and vacuum and teach it not to chew things it probably wouldn't destroy your house, though.

My friend had had a Boston Terrier, I myself terrorized it. When he was outside I'd tease him in front of the sliding doors and he would bark and jump up and down. Pretty high too. I would classify the dog as a jumper..or hopper. It jumps and barks and they can get out of hand at times. Honestly with a 2 year old I would NOT get one, they can be very high strung, could even knock over your 2 year old.
I would just suggest a "calmer" dog, golden retreiver, corgie, dashund, even some other terrier.
I personally cannot stand Boston Terriers, yea they're cute, but that's it for me. There are no other pros I can see from them. Good luck in deciding.

one con is that they like to start fights with other dogs. one pro is that they love children, they will protect them. i suggest a boxer they are the best dogs to have around young kids. we have a 4 month old and a boxer and the dog doesn't even try to jump or anything. he will just lick her hand or foot sometimes. most of the time when we have her out he sits completely still.
