You've got already a lot of good answers but since,as somebody has posted, "gratis" is a word from Latin ,being Latin a "dead language" I'm curious to know how here above answerer Martha P. can quote she's "mother tongue".....!!
Latin is not same as Spanish....!! and "gratis" has the same meaning in Italian, French, Portuguese, Rumenian, ect. and all these languages + others are not Latin but Romance languages.

Free = gratis,
For example, "If you buy 50 $ of merchandise you will have a nice calculator for free"

Gratis means "for free".
It comes from the Latin and it is used in Italy and Spain for sure... don't know if it is used even in other countries...
