The caste system is a modern semblance of the Varnasrama system. Even without so-called "caste system" we may still see people engaging in a general occupational category generation after generation. The original system of Varnasrama suggested occupation according to one's nature at birth. They were able to make pretty accurate determination of one's nature through astrological calculations. That is the belief. And that belief would suggest that the occupation of one's family was secondary concern. But, the caste system or varnasrama dharma is second to one's spiritual advancement. So spiritual advancement can sometimes over-ride caste distinctions.

The Caste System is a good idea in theory. By ensuring that people stay in the profession where they're born, you will always have enough of any given profession. You also know that you will always have a job and a support system from your peers. A feudal society works kinda the same way.

However, as with any man-made creation, greed and pride creeps in, and you wind up with people being discriminated against based on who their parents were. Not just about jobs and work, but also about location, economic status, skin colour. Eventually, it shifted from being about how people should live to being about how some people are better than others.

I think its more of a cultural idea... In India, the culture is completely different than america... like, to them it may seem just and fair, because they chose to have a system like that. but from an american standpoint, it isn't. the Fathers of America chose to have a "system" of society that allows everyone to have an equal opportunity everywhere... America is NOT perfect, and it never will be, no society anywhere will ever be completely just and fair, someone is bound to break it up. The caste system from an American standpoint is not just or fair, because Americans expect everyone to be accepted equal. Its just a matter of what you grew up with etc. If thats what they believe then let them believe it.
