Advantages of using energy from water

It is renewable
Hydroelectricity produces no gas emissions or waste.
It is more reliable than solar and wind power – because water can be stored and there is more of it, more often.
Hydroelectric stations are inexpensive to operate.

Disadvantages of using energy from water

Large dams take up large areas of land and can cause fish and other animals to relocate.
Plantlife can be affected by a change in water quality.
The power stations are expensive to build.

Advantages to hydroelectric power:
Fuel is not burned so there is minimal pollution
Water to run the power plant is provided free by nature
It's renewable - rainfall renews the water in the reservoir, so the fuel is almost always there

The major advantage of hydro systems is elimination of the cost of fuel. Hydroelectric plants tend to have longer lives than fuel-fired generation, with some plants now in service having been built 50 to 100 years ago. Operating labor cost is usually low since plants are automated and have few personnel on site during normal operation.

Disadvantages:
Hydroelectric projects can be disruptive to surrounding aquatic ecosystems.
Another disadvantage of hydroelectric dams is the need to relocate the people living where the reservoirs are planned.

Advantage: it is the ultimate renewable energy source; the energy is free. Disadvantage: there will be effects (some beneficial, some not) from the impoundment of the water. Most of the world's useful sites for hydroelectric development have already been done, so there is not much available capacity remaining unused.
