From my experience they all don't last long.
They break down right after the warranty expires.
So, charge it to an American Express card for the extended warranty.
My DVD recorder broke after 1 year and under AE's extended warranty they refund my full purchase price instead of repairing it.
Now I charge everything on my AE. It's the best card.

Pioneer. the DVR-640
Not only are you getting a quality recorder, it's the easiest one to use. Menus have "hints" to explain menu items and guide you. And a "help" button if you get stuck. It also is a 160gb dvr. Plus it has video processing for superb picture quality. But yes, it's $399.

(Still, if you are using an antenna for hdtv rather than cable or satellite, this dvd recorder does not have an atsc tuner so you won't be able to hook it up to antenna after Feb 19, 2007.)

Certainly you'll want to pick based on your budget. And you can get a basic dvd recorder for about $100. These are standard DVD recorders and the picture quality will be limited in the world of HDTV. So you might want to get a budget model until they get some kind of higher quality , high def solution.
