God is One and has no need for sexual reproduction and therefore it seems logical that gender is a limitation that only exists on Earth and not in Heaven where it would serve no purpose. Why then do some people insist that God must be referred to in the masculine sense at all times?

In the big picture, I consider God to be vast, and androgynous. But in bringing God down to an earthly level, where I can relate to it better, I prefer to address "God" as a couple, one male, one female. It takes both energies to create life on the planet, so I prefer to view both energies creating the life of the planet. I personally think that it's unbalanced to go all the way to one extreme or the other, but some folks are just more comfortable that way. That the Christian religion prefers a patriarchal God, is more a reflection of the leadership being male dominated. To each his own.
To Riegen: In the film "The butcher's wife" Demi Moore tells the story of the split apart. That in the times before Eve became a separate entity from Adam, in theologies that preceded that, all humans were androgynous, living in a blissful state, and were somehow separated by an outside agent. Then we spend all of our lives seeking the other half, in order to once again connect with the other half, which in human terms is through sex, in order to try and regain that state of ultimate bliss. Perhaps in attaining heaven, and re-joining an androgynous God, we are allowed to re-connect with the other half, and enjoy the state of bliss all the time, without a need for sex.

God has no gender since He is not human. Oh you noticed I wrote "He"?
Take the sentence "when a child cries it means that he is hungry". Notice again that I wrote "he" because, as a child could be a he or a she, in writing you choose one gender for such "genderless" words when you need a pronoun and stick to it, otherwise your text would be full of "he or she" which makes the reading not as flowing as it should.
Would you rather have God take the pronoun "It"? This is only the way with which God is referred to avoid repeating "God" all the time. It does not have to do with gender.

Hope it's clearer now...
Peace

Because the Bible has it so deeply ingrained that women were an afterthought. Adam was made in Gods image and Eve wasn't.

To be honest, that 2nd class thing is one of the main reasons I stopped considering the Bible as the word of God. Women are unclean, women shouldn't speak in church, women should submit to their husbands wills... blah blah blah.

Edit/addition: I agree with Ross.

I agree with you, God isn't a he or a she. God is God. I think we just refer to God as "He" the same way we refer to a car as "she".

In other words, it helps our mind wrap around the idea of a spirit being All Knowing and All Powerful.

I would say he would want to be called a she. Look at the facts. When ignored, God killed every living mammal on the planet Earth!!! When ignored again, he killed every living first born mammal in Egypt. These are the spiteful misgivings of a woman scorned, not a man!

People often use the term "Almighty" when describing God. The term almighty means "having unlimited power", yet this “almighty” needs our prayer? That is a gross contradiction. A God that kills first born children may be almighty, but it shows a serious emotional problem if he needs our justification. Something that is not a good description of a god.

We call God him because the Bible says God created man in his own image. He didn't say woman. Although, I doubt if he has a gender.

It doesn't matter to me. I can't see it would matter to Him/Her. I think some people are so afraid for their beliefs that they go overboard on the non-essentials. It seems some feel anything not in their creed will somehow undermine their faith. My faith in God is strong enough that nothing makes me fear. Fear is negative and destructive.
