I was told by my vet that i could put a bit of canfood and mix it with the milk replacement to make it into a slushy. My kitten seems to not like the dish appoach cause she's so use to the syringe or the bottle. So i was wondering if there are other ways of feed her??? I tried a small saucer dish and she'll try to eat it but she keeps on putting her nose in it while she eats. Help!

My kitten is 5 weeks old and the mother isn't around cause she wouldn't feed them or go near them when they were 3 week old or she would attack. So my sister who has the cats had to get rid of her. I just got my kitten 5 days ago, today would be six. cause the other kittens didn't make it. and they were bigger than she was, i think i might have the runt cause she is very small. she only weighs 5.29 ounces and she looks like she is 3 weeks old really. The mother was also a small cat so it could be that too.

I've weaned many kittens and what I do is mix a little canned cat food (special for kittens) with a little kitten milk replacer on a paper plate. Start out with about a tablespoon all together. Then put the paper plate in the microwave for a few seconds until it gets just a little warm. This will release the smell of the food and your kitten should be attracted to it. I'd put a little just below his nose and put his front paws on the plate. You might also have to stick his nose on it, but this usually works.

The next step would be to mix a little dry kitten food with the canned food and KMR mix.

Be patient and do this slowly. I wouldn't worry about the nose in the food. This is a learning process after all.

You didn't say how old this kitten is. We usually keep the kittens with their momma for at least two months. We offer the food described above at 4 weeks so they are generally weaned by 8 weeks, but sometimes it takes 10.

Maybe add just a bit more of the milk replacement to the canned food to make it more drinkable. Also, if she can't eat by herself yet maybe she should still be with mother. Usually they stay with mom until they are totally weaned. If she isn't at least 6 weeks old she's to young to be without her family of cats. Make sure that the food isn't real cool, make it a bit warm. I always started my kittens out with regular rice baby cereal mixed with the milk replace. Is easier to digest and easier to suck up off the plate. Try it. It works real well. Raised many orphan kittens as vet tech.

When she sticks her nose in it is her trying to learn how to eat it. She has to learn to use her tongue and mouth instead of sucking. Actually, when teaching the kittens we get, we stick their noses in it to start with to help them figure it out (no we dont just hold it there, but rather dip it). If she still doesnt want to eat it, start by holding your syringe and slowly feeding her, making her basically lick the end, than lead her head to the bowl with the syringe. She will be fine once she is hungry enough to catch on. Cats are natural survivors!

well she is going to have to figure this all out . i would let her go for a bit she will figure this all out at some point .
you can if you wish go back to the syringed sometimes at first but you do need to make the change and sure she will cry and have a hard time at first but that's life.

She's just little and learning. Just wipe her nose when she's done, she'll get the hang of it and not make so much of a mess.

She just needs practice; let her keep working on it. She'll make a mess for a while, but she'll figure it out.

Maybe it is learning, give it a little more time.
