This question features regularly and is impossible to answer because it depends entirely on what your own mother tongue is.

For example, Turkish is a notoriously difficult language for an Englishman or American to learn because the structure of the language is completely different to Western European langugaes; for an Azeri or Uzbeki, however, Turkish would be fairly easy to learn, since their langugaes are related.

Slavic languages - Russian, Polish, Czech, Serbo-Croat, Slovenian, Slovak, Bulgarian, and so forth, are also quite tricky for Western Europeans but easy for other Slavs.

English is generally held to be a difficult langugae to learn to express oneself well in - although its structure - grammar and syntax, etc, are quite straightforward, its use of idioms and its sound system are extremely unpredictable.

Of the Western European languages, Basque is probably one of the hardest for a non-native to learn; it is not known to be related to any other living language in the world and a local legend says that Satan went to the Basque country to learn Basque so that he could tempt the Basques - after seven years, all he had learnt were the words for "yes" and "no" and he forgot those as he stepped over the border back into Navarre - this is supposed to be the reason why modern Basques are so "virtuous" (anyone who has spent time with the Basques will appreciate the irony/humour of this...).

thats a tough one ..its hard as is trying to understand
in any lanquage i was ment to beleive anyone can
learn or be gifted to know different tongues...
to speak two as i did read and write them...
and come to one conclution.... one can express them selfs
in any language i beleive its sign lanquage..too be
the most knowledgable coming from the gift of your hands
as in any lanquage its not the need of the tonque
to understand as its the hand s that takes care,,
of all the understandment too solve all conclustion
as too learn we are ment to use that silence...
in all languages working with your hand signals
so i suppose its sign lanquage it has no curiosity
at all nor do you have too waste your time
so long as the eye sees and even blind
the hand comforts as if deaf to words
so i quess its got nothing to do how many
or not you know... nothing should ever be diffcult
its not a book you can say you realy read in any alphabet
nor in any difficult tonque lanquage its the hand
that reaches intoo your being,,,, like any tune
....it reaches out in silence...heck you cant see it,,
but hell you surely can feel it...
no lanquage is difficult nor the most too consider
nor ever think you can interpertate..as well
comprende,,,,

Chinese is pretty difficult because you've got to build up a whole library of words in order to express yourself. Each word has a different meaning and a different writing, so that has to be memorised. But speaking it is easier!

I believe, if I remember correctly, the most difficult language to learn (for those who do not grow up speaking it) is Navajo. After that, probably English, as we've had so many different influences.

basque, hungarian, finnish are the european languages that are the most complex and difficult to learn...
i wouldn't qualify english to be a difficult language - in this case, it wouldn't have the worldwide status it has!
chinese is not so hard when spoken, it's rather the written chinese which is really hard to acquire.
