are all the cuddles and purring just a ploy to get more food?

LOL! Sounds like you may have found out the Cat's Master Plan in life.

Seriously though, we have barn cats who hunt for their food. We don't supply them any food. Yet they still come out to play and get petted and cuddled. One rides the tractor with me. So I would have to say that they really aren't as food motivated as we might think.

LOL sometimes I think it's true what you just said. One of my cats cuddles and purrs for a little then he starts walking in the direction of the cat bowl. But the other cat is more like a dog and will always cuddle and roll over for a belly rub just for the affection, then just fall asleep beside me.

well i could say that about this one cat that lives in the house, it was a gift for my friends daughter , i call it moocher , cause all it does is want to go outside an want to come inside just to eat so it can go back outside again. if they kept the food outside then the cat would never care to see the people again lol. however they do have two other cats who love there humans an want atention for no particular reason. those two happen to be siamese , an moocher is a mixed breed

How long do you owe a cat at all?

You should notice by now that cats purr when they feel comfortable and relaxed.

They cuddle and rub into you to mark you as their owner ( they leave very weak smell that we, people don't feel at all, but it's strong enough for the other cats).

If they're hungry, they'll meow.

Yeah, pretty much. The are interested in sleeping, and sometimes in a feather toy. Other than that, food and being stroked are the primary aims in the life of a cat ;-)

Cats need attention and play too. My cat will sometimes meow at me and head-butt me, then when I feed him eat maybe a bite or 2 and leave the rest, showing he was more interested in the attention than the food.

My cats love to cuddle and play. My kitten chases christmas bows and fetches. She actually brings them back to you for you to toss again. We have lots of fun with that. My older cat usually just wants to sleep after eating and most of the time.

Cats also have a deep and abiding interest in torturing helpless things; maybe yours has found a way to combine the two interests?

Pretty much, but they do like attention too! Try reading the newpaper when the cat is around. Suddenly, its all over you because you are ignoring it.
