Regarding wood filler, all purpose filler, etc..
Are the powdered variety that you mix yourself generally better than the more expensive ready mixed types that come in tubes?

And what are the best products?

If you're doing a large project then the powdered fillers make perfect sense. But if you're just filling a few nail holes and a few cracks, they're not worth the effort. Spend the $1.45 for a small tube, match the color, and be done with it.
Minwax and Formby's are both good, but Elmers works absolutely fine, too.

the best wood filler that i have come across is Minwax and it comes in a yellow tube or tub. just remember to put a little on to cut your sanding time down you can always add more.
