They are both just magic.

Their only difference is the colour name people gave them. Maybe to have some excuse to practise "white" magic as something simple and innocent.

Best answer should go to a Red Mage, who dabbles in both.

White magic is curative magic, for the most part. It involves spells like Cure, Esuna, Protect, and Shell. The only offensive white magic spell is Holy.

Black magic is offensive magic, and is only used to attack the enemy. You have spells like Fire, Blizzard, and Thunder, as well as Bio, Flare, and Ultima.

There's also Blue magic, which are usually skills obtained from enemies.... like Matra Magic, Goblin Punch, and Heaven's Cataract.

Time magic affects time, obviously. Spells like Haste, Slow, and Stop fall under this category.

Well, in short, white magic is the influencing of people, objects, and physical phenomena. It can heal or harm people, bring on the fertility of earth. Used for good

Black magic is used to bring on malevolent spirits or used for malevolent acts. There is an on going debate on the differences between the two.

The difference is in the eye of the beholder; it's a subjective difference. However, the most commonly accepted definitions go somewhat as follows:

White Magick- Magick that is directed towards a "positive" purpose. Not so much "good" as in the Christian concept of "good and evil", as though they are distinct polar opposites, but rather positive as in being proactive or causing something to come about, arise, be created, grow, animate, etc. When conducting ritual or equivalent action within "White Magick", one would, for example, be likely to make movements in the deosil, or clockwise, direction.
However, what one person considers "White Magick", where they think they are causing a positive reaction or helping themselves or another, could easily be misconstrued as "Black Magick" by someone else, especially the intended "target" if that person did not wish the practitioner to target them with the "White Magick".

Black Magick- Magick that is directed towards the negation, banishment, exorcism, release, etc. of things. Often considered to be magick that is "evil", most Pagans do not believe in the Christianised concept of "good and evil", and thus "Black Magick", while sometimes working with "dark forces" (such as the dark/new moon, dark colours, death/rebirth, transcendence, past-life regression, etc.), is not evil in the common sense.
Workings in "Black Magick" would incorporate movements in the widdershins, or counter-clockwise, direction, and would use items that tend to be dark in colour.

"Black Magick" also refers to matters of an esoteric nature, those things that are considered outside the boundaries of common thought and which carry stigmas and break through the dogma surrounding normal religions. As previously mentioned, this includes, death/rebirth rites, transcendence, astral projection, divination (i.e. using a black mirror to scry), using poisonous or semi-poisonous herbs in Green Magick, and so on. These are termed "Black Magick" because they are outside of social norms (according to each specific culture), and are often used by the young and/or uneducated/uninitiated to act out or rebel against society and feel they are "evil", such as pretending they are vampires (as compared to those who practise a true form of vampirism), those who act out scenes of the macabre, watch snuff films for fun, perform "rites" and "rituals" from pointless books to the like of "Dark magick for the teenage witch," live the "goth" lifestyle, or proclaim themselves Satanists [which, I would like to point out, are simply anti-fundamentalist Christians, much to their chargrin when they come to that realisation :-) ] and idealise the sacrifice of virgins and babies.

"Black Magick" is not evil, is not Satanic, and is not for causing retribution or negativity in the world. It is simply the equal and opposite component from "White Magick" within the entire spectrum of Colour Magicks.

But in the end, Magick is Magick. It is not a religion, it is not a game, it is not a trend, and it is not for the uneducated. Magick is the essence of all that is and is not, and is the practice of manipulating the energies of all that is and is not. It is a method of thinking; it is a way of life. And whether one believes in it or not, it IS.

Hope that helps. :-)
