I am celebrating my birthday in April. He is planning to buy me a ring. I think its a gold ring. Is that of value or is a diamond ring better? What would you girls prefer for your boyfriend to buy for your engagement/birthday? I know my man cannot afford one just now, but my mom says he should get me a diamond ring. I am not crazy about either, just want to know. We have been dating since kids and he is the only guy I have ever dated, but he is old fashioned and prefers gold to diamond. He says when we are married he will get me diamonds, but for our informal engagement its only a gold ring. By the way, what is the different between informal engagement and formal engagement? Do we get the ring blessed in the church? Can I have the ring blessed at any church? I am a christian from India. My boyfriend is hindu converted to christian so he is not very well versed with things. Please give me some tips and wish me luck!

Thanks dear friends for your honest opinions...

Bye and take care!

Let me tell you something....it doesn't matter what he gives you, as long as you cherish it and consider it a symbol of his love. I've never heard of an informal engagement, but there is something called a "promise ring"...meaning he promises himself to you. I have received a diamond ring from my boyfriend (now fiance) and it's beautiful. I was excited when he gave it to me, but it could have been a plastic ring and I wouldn't have cared. Like I said, it's all about what that ring means to you.

I think you should go shopping together to find one that's within budget, that suits & fits you, & you love everything about it, rather than at this stage, trying to determine which is best...
Check to make sure any diamond/s have been legally sourced... (have you seen the film 'Blood Diamonds'?)

Are you going to buy him a ring?
In which case maybe a matching pair (his & hers)?

An inherited ring from someone in your family might be more special... or an antique ring because they are often more affordable & beautiful... (that would be my preference), & they go up in value!

It is not a case of how much is paid, only with how much love is it given...

I don't know if rings are blessed - I thought the people were, & the ceremony... Nor do I know the difference between in/formal - sorry!

I wish you both the very best XXX

For u what is precious - gold or diamond or the man who loves u. Whatever the man who loves u, give as gift with all his love, trust is much more precious then a diamond or anything in this world.
Wish u many many happy returns of the day.

Ok, the first ring is what I go on our 2nd Christmas together, a promise ring. Then this year on my bday (March 13) I just got a card that said, I just owe a little bit more on this ring and it is yours. 2nd link.....It is the ring i have been eyeballing for months!!!!

If you dont want a gold ring, tell him, he doesnt have to wear it for ever and you do. He doesnt have to buy you a ring in april, he can do what my bf did (who is 20 and never had credit) Put 500 on credit and is paying cash for the rest! He can wait until you get the ring that you deserve and will cherish forever!

Go looking together, I went to a Zales outlet to find the perfect ring for me and I got the one on the 2nd link for almost half of the sale price on the website. He can get one on sale or clearence. What do you want? Look around and decide together, he can always get you a small promise ring until he can afford it. I know it sucks to wait, but you will be wearing it forever!!!

Good Luck! Let me know how things turn out please!
