GLI is the sport name for the Jetta, not the rabbit. GTI is the sport name for the rabbit. The rabbit and Jetta are practically the same cars with the same engines, but the rabbit is a hatchback and the jetta is a sedan.

VW first unveiled the "GLI" badge on the Jetta marque back in the early 80s. The Jetta GLI is the same as the Golf/Rabbit GTI.

So if you love the performance of the GTI but need a car with a trunk, the GLI is the car for you.
