I had the misfortune of getting engaged to a Filipina, and as soon as we were engaged, she started asking for money for her family. I would send her money to help her get a passport, and instead, she would give it to her family. The engagement is over, but I just have to wonder what the heck is going through their heads that they expect the guy to support not only her but her parents, brothers, sisters, nephews, and nieces.

i know someone who married a fillipina and she seems like a gold-digger... from what i heard, he had to install a phone line in her village.... I guess the grass looked greener on the other side....
I dont think all Filipina women are like this.... maybe you should try to date a filipina who has a job and some things to bring to the table? Go getters dont need anyones money, let alone for their family. I do think some of them marry American men(blk, wht, asian, hispanic) specifically for a change in social status. But hey, isnt life all about survival?

I don't know the specifics of the situation, whether that was a cultural thing or they just saw you coming from a mile a way. I do know that when you marry any woman, you marry her family also, that is why is it nice if the couple can get to know each other's families for a while before getting married, and becoming a bigger extended family. Don't let this unfortunate experience sour you on marriage, you'll find the right person.

That's really a shame.... and it's because your a rich American?? Brit?? and she is in a horrible 3rd world country and it's hard to get jobs or if you have one to make any money. My company that I work for has a factory over there and it's hard braking to see children of 15 who the factory considers legal adults working as slaves. That passport money prob feed her whole family.... and think about it on her end. Is she going to just leave them or use the money to feed family? Sounds like she had a good heart.... if she ran off an left them.. that would be terrible to!!

Its the cultural value of family. The filipino mindframe is different from American values. Filipinos think about not just themselves but their families and when they get married, they expect their spouse to share the same values. She was sending money to her family becuase life in the phillipines is hard and each family member looks out for one another.

sorry to hear bout your misfortune but don't generalize. you were just one unlucky fellow. Thank God it was over & be more cautious next time. Hope this experience will not leave you the same impression for all people of the Philippines.

I dont know about her specifically but you shouldnt have to support her family. When you get engaged/married you are supposed to support your wife not her entire family.
