My girlfriend and I are staying in a hotel in the Upper West Side of New York City near the American Museum. What is this neighborhood like in terms of feeling safe, atmosphere, and easy transportation to the rest of the city?

The Upper West side is my favorite place in Manhattan! It's less tourist-y and calmer. There's 3 subway lines in that area (C, B, and 1 trains) and buses that go through this area. It's easy to get to the east side using the crosstown bus. There's tons of great shopping on the east side, especially 5th avenue and Madison Avenue. There's also tons of restaurants on Amsterdam and Columbus avenues. The area is safe.

This is a great neighborhood - safe - great architecture, interesting restaurants, close to buses and subways, Central Park, Riverside Park, museums. I love the sidewalk book peddlers near Zabars. Try Pampa, an inexpensive Argentine steakhouse on Amsterdam and 94th (good looking waiters - large outdoor garden). Be sure to see Lincoln Center at night - the lights reflecting on the fountain - beautiful. Eat at Gray's Papaya - corner of 72nd and Broadway - two delicious hotdogs and a fresh tropical juice for $2.99 - no seating - you eat standing up at a counter looking out onto Broadway. Less than 10 minute subway ride from Times Square - the bus goes there too - takes a little longer, but it's a much more interesting ride. Easy ride to Greenwich Village - be sure to go to both the East and West Village. Wear your most comfortable shoes and have a great time.

The area is great!

But be careful of some of the cheap hotels in the area. They could be run down.

You will be within walking distance of the Dakota. Across the street is Strawberry Fields. This is hallowed ground for a Lennon/Beatles fan like me. On Lennon's Bday I still go there with my daughter and sing out loud with the Musicians celebrating his life.

its an incredible place, wealthy and interesting, alot of films are filmed there even when i was living there they were filiming all the time.Make sure to pop into Zabars.

I felt very safe all the time,it was clean and pretty quiet for NYC,it had an incredible atmosphere there is a real spirit to the place, alot of things going on.

The subways are all very easy and cheap to use walk towards the apple[?] bank to get to the subway.
