One of the advantages of d-SLR's is a high quality optical viewfinder that shows you exactly what the lens sees.

Although you have to look through the "small view hole", it is larger and clearer than the viewfinder on point and shoot cameras.

You also get the advantage of better bracing of the camera by contact with your face. This reduces camera shake and jarring.

Perhaps when you get used to the viewfinder, you will like it better than the LCD. I did!

Good Luck

For most DLSR's (Rebel XT, D40, K100D) you have to use the veiwfinder (little hole). There are only a handfull that can use the LCD screen as an active viewer.

Olympus E510
Fuji S3/S5 (limited usage)
Canon EOS 1d Mk III (limited usage)
