I am exhausted, yet when I lay down I just cannot seem to fall asleep. I don't like to take sleep aids-they just make me "sleep drunk" in the AM

The most important thing you can do is to set a sleep schedule. This means going to bed and getting up at the same time everyday, weekdays and weekends. It takes discipline, but it's very important to get yourself on a routine so that your body and mind understand that it's time to sleep.
If this doesn't help, talk to your doctor. See this site for more information,

Edit- If your husband snores that badly, he may have sleep apnea. Get that checked out, for the good of both of you!

I have the same problem with any over-the-counter sleeping pills. I feel a hang over effect from taking them and I don't really sleep much better anyway. I do a visualization technique. I have a problem with relaxing--my mind wants to dwell on job issues when I go to bed. I put myself visually in a special peaceful place and really think about the place and what I'm doing there. For example, I use laying on a beach and I think about the sounds of the waves and the breeze and the sun on me. I like to vary the fantasy, so I remember some canoe trips I've taken on mountain lakes. Even though I'm happily married, the fantasy works best for me if I have no other person in the place with me--but I often take a dog on the fantasy. If you can't sleep because of work or worries, use the technique called "transferance." Acknowledge you have an issue to solve, and make an appointment with yourself to think about it at 9 am the next morning, for example. Every time that issue intrudes, just remind yourself you are going to deal with it at 9 am.

being exhausted does not necessarily guarantee sleep.
a no. of factors including being comfortable , having the right ambient and being actually sleepy at the time all contribute to a good nights sleep.
i would have said go take a brisk jog around the block and by the time you get back, the increased cardiovascular activity coupled with some tiredness (not exhaustion) and the rush of oxygen round the body and brain should do the trick in no time at all. of course when you are done you should wash off the sweat with a tepid to cold shower and the relief should surely knock you out onetime! its the reason most athletes and footballers can sleep well and for long periods.
try it too!

I am so sorry to hear about your dilemma! I can relate, as well.
I was injured at work over 15 years ago, and thought I would never get a good night's rest again.
I made all of the changes that were advised to me. Take all the "work" items out of my bedroom; (work out equiptment, computer, even the TV); painted subtle, calm colors, bought dimmer switch, and candles.... I also stopped excersizing or eating at least 4 hours before bed, all with only a little improvement.
Then, something happened that was totally unexpected. I began to drink a natural fruit juice to help control my blood pressure (which works wonders, by the way). But, before I noticed the reduction of my pressure readings, I realized that I accually had slept for 8 hours a night for the past few nights! I felt like a new woman.
If ever I do not drink my juice for a few days, my blood pressure rises, and the old sleep(less) patterns return. I know many people who claim that it also helps with spousal snoring syndrome.

Best of luck to you !

I guess we are having the same problem. And sleeping pills are not the solution. You may sleep but in the morning you wake up stoned. It's just hyper tension and i'm sure you think all sorts of things when you lie down. This is the problem.Stop thinking about various things when you are in bed and focus on your breath.A cup of nice hot chamomile before going to bed, might help you relax a little bit.Another good thing to do is change sheets and pillow cases very often so that they are always fresh smelling. It really helps. It makes me feel more comfortable.I wish you good luck and hoping for the best sleeps from now on

Well, if ur husband sleeps with a pillow, just change it. It could be that his breathing is affected by the position he sleeps in. His body is not in proper allignment so mayb that may be the cause. Have u tried clearing ur mind by taking a long hot bath b4 u go to bed and unwind by reading a book.

YOU ARE GETTING YOURSELF IN A STATE, YOU ARE OBVIOUSLY WORRYING WHEN YOU GET INTO BED THAT YOU ARE NOT GOING TO SLEEP,AND CAUSING YOUR BRAIN TO BE MORE ACTIVE, I FIND THE BEST WAY TO RELAX AND FALL ASLEEP IS TO READ.IT TAKES YOUR MIND OFF EVERYDAY THING'S AND CALM'S ME DOWN SO I END UP FALLING ASLEEP.ALSO HAVING A MILKY DRINK HELPS ,AND AVOID COFFEE AND TEA.

I will help you, I don't help to hear "thank", but to pass time. What you need to be to please me is to be nothing!
To spleep well, you need to love night walking! You will make your mind bedlam, you will be a raging sea! Read Friedrich Nietzsche until you are so tired.
