wel yes it can be harmful but there is a new method called Bionic or along that name.. it permanently straightens hair for up to 6months to a year depending how fast your hair grows. you are able to go swimming and stuff and it still stays straight. the hairdresser who offers it will give you all the details and how much it costs but be prepared to pay quite a bit of money depending on the length of your hair. the longer it is the more expensive the process is going to be.

Of course, every chemical activities on hair with heat always harm hair. certainly the ends of your hair will be very dry.

yes, it makes hair brittle and not-very-nice-looking after a few months.
