Philosophically speaking hammer is doing the work driving in the nail and the nail will do the work when fixed in its place.

This is a trick question. Actually they both perform work to a degree. The hammer is needed to drive the nail and the nail connects the object. The latter being a version of work. All hammers are not hand held. There are automatic hammers, gun hammers, claw hammers and peen hammers. To drive the point further, the hammer or nail cannot complete the 'mission' without doing the 'work.'

Neither, its the arm, that's what generates the force to get the job done (ore more specifically, the muscles in the arm) The hammer is just a tool, an extension of your arm (and so could be called the thing doing the work)

The nail is just a consumable.

Work is the product of applied force and the resultant distance. In this case the force is the product of mass of the hammer and its accelleration(given by the performer). The accelleration is given by the performer and the force is applied by the performer.Whenever there is a trasfer of energy there is a work done.Hammer getting moved and the nail getting moved are the two kinds of work in this case

Both at different times. The hammer to affix the nail to whatever it is holding together..which is how the nail works.
