Hi there. I work in a sleep lab, and trust me, I hear this story a lot. You need to get in to see your doctor about this. There are a lot of things that can cause you to need excessive sleep, and many of those things can be treated so that you could have more waking hours and more energy.

Keep a sleep log for about two weeks. Record what time you go to bed and wake up, how you feel before and after, whether or not you remember dreaming, and how many times you woke up during the night along with any other notes you think might be important (like, "my dog jumped on the bed and woke me up at 6 am but I went back to sleep).

Your doctor can help you! You may have an underlying sleep problem, and they may send you for a sleep study. But don't worry if they do- it is totally painless! There could also be a non-sleep related cause for your sleepiness, and that is something else you should address.

Check out this website for more tips, it's the National Sleep Foundation.

Good luck, and feel free to email me with any specific sleep questions, it's sort of my job to help if I can :)

I have a lot of sleep problems myself. I can go DAYS without sleep. I know you may have heard this, but it sounds like you're getting too much sleep. I used to be the same way my first year of college, I would HAVE to have about 12 hours, and even then never felt great. I saw a doctor and they gave me this advice:

- Give yourself a bed time. Don't go more than a half an hour off of this.
- Give yourself a wake up time. Make it 7-8 hours after your "bed time". Even though it's hard... FORCE yourself to get up (trust me, I know how painful this is)
- Cut out caffeine and other stimulants (such as cigarettes). They have ALOT to due with sleeping problems.
- Relax for an hour before bed
- Exercise regularly (another painful one for me)

After trying all of this, it actually did help. It is really hard at first, and it takes time, but you will end up on a better sleep cycle. I have other reasons for my insomnia now, but I'm trying to get back into the habit of good sleep. I hope it works out for you though... Good luck!!

Taking 5 htp may not be the answer. Misuse of tryptophan can be dangerous. It can cause you to sleepwalk and do things in your sleep and not remember them later.
I would go to a doctor.
Most of the time daily exercise and not eating junk food (potato chips, candy bars, and soda pop) will help you feel
energized, but I would check with your doctor first to be sure there is no underlying medical problem.

Take a look at your diet - if you eat alot of junk stop. Drink loads of water and eat plenty of fruit and veg. Sounds boring but defo works.
