First of all, best of luck to you.
From what I have learned, "diets" do not work. You have to decide to make a lifestyle change in order to successfully lose the weight and keep it off. You can not "target" certain parts of your body, you must condition your body as a whole.
Make up your mind that you will drink plenty of water, eat 5 or 6 small healthy meals throughout the day, and burn more calories than you take in, with cardio training. Weight resistance training is important, too. Lean muscle burns fat, even at rest. Besides, who wants to be thin and still flabby?
Remember this, when you feel you have earned a reward, don't go out to an amazing restaurant for an expensive meal. Instead, buy yourself a new outfit to show off the new YOU!
Don"t wait until "Monday" to begin your new lifestyle. Do some research, collect some recipes, rid your kitchen of fatty, sugary foods, go shopping for healthy foods, decide on your cardio and resistance program, and get started on your new life right away. You are important to the people in your life. No need to wait.
(Oh, yeah, don't forget to indulge yourself with small portions of your favorite foods-usually a dessert- every once in a while. Otherwise, you will be tempted to go way overboard when you do have the opportunity to enjoy your "cake")

I started my diet 2 weeks ago. I eat 6 small meals a day. Tae Bo twice a week, walk twice a week, and swim twice. I don't work out the other day. I eat 21-30 grams of fat and 1,000 calories, no soda, not much sugar, and tons of water. I have already lost 11 pounds. I feel that if you starve yourself your just asking to fail. It's all about portion control and making sure you exercise. I know that right now I am doing more than I was before, so I feel pretty good.

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter your stats and it will tell you how many calories a day you need to maintain your weight. take 300-400calories off that number and that's how much you need to lose weight.
eat 5-6 small meals a day instead of 3 big ones.
5-8 servings of fruit and vegetables a day.
8 glasses of water a day.
4-6 times a week cardio work out for 30-50min plus light weight training.
no junk food, no sodas, no white flour (white bread, pasta, cookies, cakes etc)

Set a date and target weight. You can still eat the amounts of food or more even, by simply changing WHAT you eat IE no burgers but you could eat two who cabbages. You also need to excersise too. Make sure you have breakfast. I choose porridge, made with water as i live in Scotland, and it is slow to release the energy, so i do not feel hungry mid morning.

Good luck.
