It depends on how rugged you want to be, to an extent. Some people go camping and take along their computers, dvd players, televisions, etc!
At the other extreme there's wild camping, for which you need to be completely independent, particularly in terms of how you'll wash, taking food supplies and having a first aid kit, and for which you need to bear in mind having to carry all your gear.
Presuming you're going for something mid-way between these (ie, staying on a campsite with facilities), you'll need:
*Tent
*Some kind of mattress (self inflating ones are good. Foam ones are cheaper. I find two foam ones ontop of each other to be reasonably comfortable).
*Sleeping bag/s
*Pillows
*Table and chairs (folding ones are a good idea but the campsite might provide proper ones anyway)
*Stove (even if you're not planning on cooking, it's good to be able to make hot drinks)
*Food and water (campsites often have grocery stores, but water's always necessary)
*Pans, plates, cutlery, mugs, etc (washing liquid and sponge to clean them with)
*Torch/light (for inside the tent and for night trips to the bathroom)
*Mallet (for the tent pegs. Not always necessary - depends on how hard the ground is - and you can sometimes borrow one from fellow campers).
*Any equipment or clothing to do with hobbies/sports
*Obvious stuff like toiletries, towels and kitchen roll (you might want to take toilet roll as well, in case the site has a shortage)
That's all really. You can keep it really minimalistic or fill the car to bursting, but so long as you've got a tent and something to keep you warm you'll get by.
Nothing like waking to the sound of birds (or even to rain falling on nylon, not that I'd wish for bad weather!)
Enjoy the trip!

Just what you need for everyday kife. Food, drink, shelter, recreation activities.
Tent and/or sleeping bag
Food and water (or some other drink). Keep it simple. Don't try to cook gourmet meals Dehydrated food is light weight..
something to cook or warm the food - stove, matches, pan
(you can build a fire)
If you are near water, fishing gear
Some form of recreation (this one depends on what you like)
Definately take someone to enjoy the experience with

Those are all good answers, but I didn't notice any one suggesting you bring fire wood. Gotta have a way to keep warm in the evenings. Also to go along with the firewood, make sure it's dry & you have something to light it with. Then you need stuff to make smores over the fire. Other than that; I think they've pretty well taken care of your question. Have fun!!

Tent, groundsheet, sleeping bag, foam mat or blow up matteress, pillow, torch, clothes, crdit card to pay for hotel when you get fed up trying to put the tent up in the wind.
Something to carry it all in. Cars are best as you can sleep in them as well.

It depends on:
Where you want to go,
How you plan to get there (car, bike, hike, etc.)
Tent, camper, cabin, park shelter?
You will need:
Clothes,
Food,
Shelter,
A way to cook the food,
A way to eat the food,
A way to wash your dishes,
Toiletries (ALWAYS bring toilet paper-- just in case),
Something to sleep in at night,
First Aid Kit (just in case),
If you take medicine: enough for your entire trip PLUS enough to give you a good safety margin (just in case.)
First time everybody usually takes WAY too much and forgets something ESSENTIAL.
You get better with practice.

All good answers, but you must remember hand soap or that anti-bacterial hand wash stuff. A good flashlight and/or lantern is a must as well.
